Synthetic Oils

Tip 42 is not wholly correct. Although the additives and possibly the detergents in fossil oils are man made, they have no lubricating qualities. Their primary functions are 1) to maintain the oil's "effectiveness" by preventing the buildup of acids from combustion byproducts, and 2) to maintain the ability of the oil to operate through a wide range of temperatures. This is accomplished by presenting polymers which lengthen when heated to maintain the oil's viscosity. Multi viscosity dino oils are sacrificing some of their lubricating abilities due to the addition of these additives. Synthetics do not have to use these additives to maintain their multi viscosity ability.
