Group Riding - Rubber Band Effect

Hey, Jim Davis. Was just thinkin'about you, and there you are. Your latest had me going for a minute.

I was reminded of Carl Sagan's explaination of "half-life." It went like this: If you drop an object, it must fall half the distance to the ground before it can fall any farther. From that point, half way to the ground, it must fall half of the remaining distance before it can fall any farther. And, from that point, it must, again, fall half way. That raises the question, if an object must fall half the distance before it can fall any farther, can the dropped object ever reach the ground?

Using this logic, no. It will never reach the ground because it always has to fall half way. The same logic was operating in the Lead Bike Scenario. However, as always, there was a twist. This time, in bullet number three, reality entered the story. This one qualifies as one of TomG's, or was it Phantom's, True Stories. Glad to see you have time on your hands, Jim. We all enjoy seeing your thought provoking postings.

By the way, just in case you need material for your oppposing views page, the add-on bullet warning against acceleration until a rider is eleven seconds into a curve fails the sound motorcycling test. Knowledgable riders know that proper cornering technique calls for constant acceleration through curves. This maintains motorcycle and suspension stability while maximizing the intelligent use of available traction. For further information on this subject, all riders are welcome to call the Motorcycle Safety Foundation at 1-800-446-9227 to find the Experienced Rider Course near them.

Other riders with time on their hands and an interest in motorcycle safety should contact their state or provincial Motorcycle Safety Program (by whatever name) and explore the potential in becoming a professional instructor. As many as there are on this list, there are rarely enough instructors to satisfy the need for training riders.
