In Case It Isn't Obvious

Dumping a bike MAXIMIZES PAIN

James,

Just spent a bunch of time downloading some of the better tips from your 'site, all are good.

I'm more into the Sport end of Sport/Touring, (although GoldWings do get a wave as I see them)

Sounds like you may be a fellow Ham operator. Mine while riding is limited to the HT that I leave in the tank bag, more from habit than anything else. Cell phone has pretty much replaced the autopatch as an emergency system.

(Being a Telecommunications Engineer has it's benifits and pitfalls. It's wonderful to know how all of this #$@! works, but I spend a LOT of time thinking about coverage patterns......)

Liked your tip on fueling. In a past life I owned a Union 76 station here in the Peoples Republic of California (next to Orange County Raceway: dated, dated, dated...) I agree with the position of getting off of the bike. Usually most of the customers who didn't managed to drop the bike hanging up the fuel hose, along with a LOT of wet crotches...

A few minor points, (although for safety reasons I'll agree with your tip "as-is"): 1. It's actually pretty hard to ignite gas vapors with static electricity. Cars start and stop their engines all day long in a service station, and even the fuel delivery trucks don't require that "all activity cease" as they used to. I wouldn't change the tip, just a point. At the Fire Acadamy, the instructor used to regularly demonstrate putting a cigarette out in a bucket of high test, but needless to say that wasn't for public knowledge!

2. The chances of a CB, or any other RF device you will ever find vehicular mounted generating enough of a field to "ignite" anything (other than Bubba's linear igniting the TV set) are pretty much non-existant. Witness the number of service stations with VHF/UHF to talk to their towing service. I ran my amateur station at full legal power for years from the Union station (and worked every TV set at the motorhome dealer across the street!)

But to reiterate, just my .02
Good Site!
