I'm copying Jim's announcement of the multiple avatar feature from its original location (here) as a convenience to new forum users. Key points are:

How to add avatar pictures

How to enable forum members to click your avatar and see a larger image

How to size your avatars

How to select which avatar forum members see

Original message from James R. Davis:

You may now have as many as four different pictures in your profile.

When a new person registers he is not allowed to include a picture until that registration is complete - that is, until he/she confirms the registration request via using the link provided in the confirmation e-mail.

Then, and it is true for all existing members now as well, that person can use the 'profile' link in the main menu list at the top right of each screen and add pictures to their profile (one at a time).

Whenever a member has at least one picture in his profile it will be seen next to any message he posts (if the reading member has elected to allow the showing of avatars).

But which picture will be shown if there are more than one pictures? Why that is another choice the member can make using the profile link. The default will always be the first picture in his profile. But for a bit of fun our members may also select 'random' to be his picture choice and as a result of that selection the system will randomly select from his set of pictures the one that will be shown.

Indeed, even when viewing a thread where the member may have several posts in it, each and every picture shown of that member will be randomly selected.

Why this change?

Well, as many of you know I have been working hard to eliminate as many of the discrete files from the system as possible in order to improve performance. As a result of that effort I have converted all image files into database binary fields (sometimes called blobs) and now the system will always show images that it has seem before via the database instead of using file I/O. This has allowed me to remove about 12,000 discrete files from the system.

It has also made it possible to eliminate errors when those images are located on some other server and that server should happen to be down when this one tries to show the image.

As with any substantial programming change one can expect the unexpected. Please, if anything unexpected does happen I would appreciate a message telling me about it rather than having to discover that same 'unexpected' situation myself - or not.

Tired of your old avatar? Now you can add and delete pictures to your hearts content. Note, however, that if you delete a picture from your profile it is irretrievably GONE as I no longer store a copy of those pictures on the server.

Two more things ... in the past you were not allowed to provide pictures that were larger than 1 Meg in size. Now you can use whatever picture you want to use, regardless of size, because once I retrieve the picture for you I will automatically re-size it so that it is never wider than 700 pixels before storing the image into the database. Finally, do NOT use avatar sized pictures! Use a normal sized picture so that when members click on your avatar they will see that normal sized picture. My code will automatically reduce a normal sized picture to avatar size when it will be used as such. Actually, I store both the full sized picture and the avatar sized version of it when I receive that picture so that the resizing effort only needs to be done once.

Testing place - Test

When your bike is traveling in other than a straight line, it is leaned over. That changes the location of the contact patch from the middle of the tire to the side.

Because the tire profile is a curve, the distance from the inner and outer edges of that new contact patch to the center of the wheel axle is different. It is that difference that causes the tire to generate what is called a 'camber thrust' - meaning an attempt to make the bike turn a tighter radius than it is currently traveling. (The outer edge of the contact patch IS traveling faster than is the inner edge.)

Glossary - Out-tracking

James R.
When in a turn your front wheel is instantaneously traveling in one direction while it is actually pointing toward the outside (relative to the curve) of that direction.

This results, because of the 'righting force', in a slight torque of the steering stem toward the inside of that turn. In other words, it is the bike's way of trying to align the direction its front wheel is pointing and its actual instantaneous direction of travel. The result, your bike attempts to go in a straight line and you must, in almost all cases, MAINTAIN counter-steering pressure on the inside grip in order to continue along your chosen path.

Board Enhancements or Problems - search

James R.
There are 8 replies, with the last one, shown below, posted on 11/11/2007 at 12:02 PM by James R. Davis
The spelling check function has been restored for the board.

This has been the most difficult debugging effort of my life. (I have been programming for over 40 years and that was not an exaggeration!)

System administrators: Caution-Warning-Danger! Be very hesitant to upgrade your msxml version. I had upgraded from msxml version 4 to version 6 a couple of weeks ago and all seemed to be working fine as a result. However, this spelling check problem led me to look very closely at some of my javascript code and sometimes it's right in front of your eyes but you can't see it.

For some reason any of my javascript modules that include multi-line comments (/* .... */) instead of using comments characters (//) for each line failed! The java interpreter no longer recognizes multi-line comments and the result was that when I referenced a java library of code (src= xxx.js) the html that was rendered would include lines of comments that looked to the java interpreter as if it was code - errors, of course - effectively making that library inaccessible.

That problem was easily corrected by replacing the multi-line comment flags with single line comment flags.

Then the next problem presented. I have built a getcookie() java function in my library. I haven't revisited that code for over ten years. However, any calls to a getcookie() function are now accessing what appears to be a built-in function of that name so my code would not be used. In fact, my code required a string cookie name as an input parameter but the built-in function expects an object instead. Thus, my code would throw an exception and that was the end of the program's functionality.

You saw that when the 'Spell Check' button disappeared from your display of text you were editing. You saw it earlier when using that button simply returned a 'No errors found' response.

Anyway, I have renamed my function and all calls to it and that restored the spell check functionality.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience, guys.
