My first day he gave me some measurements and asked me to cut a piece for him. When I proudly returned he measured the piece and went spastic. He tore me apart. He rejected it explaining that it was 1/16 inch too short. I pretty much told him it was good enough. I will summarize his long harsh life lesson to me by saying that put 16 similarly flawed pieces together and at the end of the run you are an inch short and you have an unacceptable end result. Carpentry is not my line of work but by the end of that summer I shared his pride in perfection and his admiration of the craftsmanship of others. If he had built your cabinets people would have thought you built the walls around them.

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - The ACEM Report for 2010

The former Chief (Kyle Hetrick) mentioned in the article is an Instructor in our state's motorcysle safety program. He was a big proponent of the M/C unit and when he retired and the new Chief was selected we knew that it was only a matter of time. Chief Lamken has never been a fan of police motorcycles and was publically opposed to the unit's existence. The current financial woes in our state are just a convenient excuse to shut the unit down. We'll be sad to see them go as they were at one time one of the best units in the country when competing in those annual events we have all seen on youtube.
Dave

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - Morbid? This would involve training and equipping a reliable service department, among a multitude of other things.

In my area, we have two principal motorcycle dealers, neither handle only one brand of motorcycle and neither handle motorcycles only.

At either dealership, you can purchase everything from generators, bicycles, motorcycles, sea-doos, ATV's, boats and motors, basically anything considered recreational.

In order to maintain the franchises on the various products, they are required to maintain a certain floor plan and qualifications relating to service of the related products.

In today's market place, I think we will find more dealerships of this nature diversifying in an effort to stay afloat.

The place I bought my most recent motorcycle was a fruit and vegetable stand in the Annapolis Valley. Henny Penny's Fruits and Vegetables/Used Cars/Used Harleys. However, in that case, I wouldn't place much stock in the service of the vehicles, but then there is no warranty implied or provided.

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - Family rear window stickers with motorcycles?

However, the situation that I have is if I had a car only, most nice days in the summer it would sit in the driveway and I would tinker around the garage or the yard. But with the bike, the garage and yard work get neglected and I will put about 200 miles on the bike just riding around and do that every day. In our roughly 6 months of riding season I put double the mileage on my bike that I do for the entire year with my car. Thus, in my case, the bike although more economical on a mile to mile comparison ends up being the least efficient of the two.

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - My daughter is stuck in customs in the UK

It is interesting to see how the riders on the 4-stroke BMWs take advantage of low end grunt, the KTM guys appeared quicker in the sprints. All in all, it comes out surprisingly close. Today, the most sophisticated sense vehicle movements in 3D, processors adjust in micro-seconds, "ferro-fluid" suspension components adjust in milliseconds, causing a landing most of us would picture as "frame crushing" or "bone-jarring" to feel more like landings in soft deep snow. Descent miles per gallon does as well. Price gets you into the neighborhood of how late a model you can get for the money with variations on condition and mileage on the vehicle.

Two items I'd suggest adding to that list (I might have missed them if they are there)... check the lights, blinkers and brake lights, since a simple and inexpensive bulb is not always the problem and people can hide electrical problems by passing it off as a burned out bulb.

Secondly, if the tires are not new/newer, it's pretty easy to see signs of trouble with front or rear alignment with uneven tire wear. This is not necessarily an expensive fix but can be an indication of a bent frame. My dad had a 71 Vette that was perfect in all respects til he drove it on snow or ice one winter and it was so squirrely that he got it checked out. It had been in a collision once before and the adjustments were at the ends of the settings but not within tolerances.

~brian

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - Don't drool on the garage floor
