There are 2 replies, with the last one, shown below, posted on 04/12/2009 at 12:25 AM by bachman1961
It doesn't help to know that the rest of the country is in the same situation and many places even worse off. I had heard (earlier in the market trends) that Colorado as a State is not hurting as bad in the respect of housing values, but it is reflective of neighborhoods and areas as you point out.

Are there other hobbies or discretionary expenses you can taper off to help fund these other two priorities?

I took a p/t job years ago to pay down some debt faster and get back into the housing market after renting for 6 years .... not everyone can do another job though if they have daycare issues or other obligations/conflicts.

One thing I've learned over many years of being a consumer; Even though the products (motorcycles) of today are excellent values, the trickle-down of technology and typical market competition will make next years model an excellent value and this is a boon to the pre-owned market as well. You can easily do some quick research to see how the value of a new or used 650 changes from year to year and this should give you some idea of what to expect.

The chances are quite good that a pre-owned bike you want today will very likely be cheaper when you delay getting it .... or the new bike you want will have some newer sleeker design or safety features on it for the next model go-round. Sometimes the model it outdates is a good value and discounted further, other times the new one is a slight step in price while offering distinct advantages well worth the model year increase. Just cut out a picture of the dream bike and stick it on the refrigerator as a reminder to squirrel away your pocket change and cut out any 'extras' or luxury spending if applicable. Yes, if you have a BWM parked in the garage already, the house value goes up and it's easier to sell... [:D].

And just because the picture is on the fridge .... try not to increase the intake of sugars and calories ... I gained a few pounds last year but I had a photo album of toys on my fridge. Basically you are allowed to bring in one non US Spec vehicle, once, during your lifetime. You need to contact a company that specializes in the service of taking possession of the vehicle at the port of entry and bring it into DOT compliance (lights, tires, etc) and certifying it. I know of no companies that do this for motorcycles and doubt that the cost would be justified. Google "importing a non us spec vehicle to the USA" or "importing a grey market vehicle" and that should get you started.

I found that the de-registration and export process when I shipped a German car from the "Magic Kingdom" was far more complicated than the process at this end, which was none-the-less not exactly a piece of cake in spite of dealing with an experienced and reputable company that specialized in grey-market imports.

My advice would be to save yourself a lot of hassle, and perhaps a lot of money, sell your bike there and buy a new one here upon your return.

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - A Presidential Trivia Question....

That was true for many years but I believe there may have been a change in those laws / rules. Over the past 12 -18 months, I've received more than a few emails from friends or family passing on that exact info and the link to register as DO NOT CALL. I didn't think to check it with snopes though.

~brian

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - Where are you putting your money?

I joke that all my money is "tied up in rental deposits". Sure, it'll never grow (more correctly, someone else is earning the interest), but we received 100% of our last deposit back; I can't say the same for my 401k.

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - I REALLY dislike crashing

Under controlled conditions, their talents are most impressive and entertaining. The primary drawback is that they don't promote keeping such activity off the road and their slogan which they prominently wear on their regalia states, "traffic laws suck". Since they are a big hit with the kids, I think it sends the wrong message to the young and impressionable. Here is a link to a slideshow of some of their antics. http://streetpunishment.net/gallery.html

When I see their performance in a show setting, I watch with awe and admiration, with my heart racing from excitement. However, when I see the same antics performed on the street it simply makes my blood boil and all admiration dissipates.

The Get Your Motor Running Chat Forum - a sign makes all the difference
