I don't know enough to speculate on his luck with that maneuver that somehow didn't drop the bike but I do wonder if his use of some front brake helped out even though his stomp on the rear brake is ill suited at all times.

I've rarely heard a mis informed rider say anything of using the front brake at all. Most of the time, they stick with "stomp on the rear brake pedal" .... this being the most common incorrect tactic I hear often.
