It's a bit sketchy and the obvious lesson is to be sure the road is clear when you initiate a u-turn. The NOT so clear lesson may be this:

The Alt-MOST and the MSF test for a 20 or 24 foot U-turn. Why? Because with a 10 foot wide lane and a couple of feet past the fog lines a road can be between 20 and 24 feet wide. Making a Y turn on a public road exposes you to all kinds of dangers! You end up trying to back pedal your bike back UP a crown, you're stopped in the lane of traffic AND there's no real escape except to launch your bike into the bushes.

Lesson? Practice your U-turns.
