This board is obviously more well protected than the average motorcyclist. Does anyone know what helmet use statistics are for the USA as a whole?
The logical follow ups would be a poll for states with mandatory helmet laws and one for states without. |

This poll is pretty incredible to me. I would have to estimate helmet usage to be no more than 10% in my area.
I assume people who find this site are already fairly concerned with safety. Although I wonder how many non-helmet wearers find a site like this and quickly tune it out because it contains subjects they "don't want to think about". Or maybe some people find this site and "get religion" about wearing a helmet. That might make for an interesting poll. |

In the USA as a whole 58% wear a DOT compliant helmet, 11% wear a non-DOT helmet. It's 48%/6% on average in states that do not require a helmet.
100% of me wears a helmet...that's the only stat I'm concerned with... |

That's too bad. You could have a positive influence on others. |

In Sweden there is a law! You very seldom see any bikers without helmet.

We have the Shoei helmets...are those considered the 3/4ths coverage? That's how I voted in poll. Wouldn't dream of riding without it

You can't tell what type of helmet it is from the brand, but I think that most Shoei helmets are full faced helmets. I have two Shoei helmets and they are considered one of the best. Both of mine are full faced helmets. |

The Shoei web site says that they make full-face, open-face, and off-road helmets.
If there is a part of the helmet in front of your mouth, it's a full-face helmet (or maybe off-road). If not, it's an open-face helmet. |

If, after the crash, you are missing all your teeth, have a broken nose and road rash on your face, you are wearing a 3/4. |

Roughly 3 weeks since m crash and the Helmet did it's job. I still got my share but I am not re-learning how to walk. Still got a broken collarbone and 3 broken ribs. I felt/heard my head bounce 3 times. sounded like a bowling ball. New helmet is on order. |

While on the subject of helmets, I'd like to recall a statistic quoted in David L. Hough's book Proficient Motorcycling, that states that the majority of helmet strikes in accidents are to the left and right chin areas. to be more specific 19.4% on the right chin area and 15.2% on the left.
It is clear that a full face helmet is better than all the other types at providing the protection where it is really required. |

Right you are, Mario. I would include the 'flip front' helmet in the full face protection category. They're closer to a solid full face than they are a 3/4 IMHO. |

I am kind of sad to say I just ordered a DOT half helmet with patriotic colors. I have two full face helmets and a 3/4 face [which I almost never wear]. Since I joined this site before buying a bike, I definitely am a full face supporter.
However I'm getting these to wear mainly for Memorial Day and July 4 rides. |
