What is interesting about this poll is that the statistics provided by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) show that the average motorcycle is ridden only about 160 miles per month for a total of only 1,920 miles per year.
Clearly our members are not 'average' in that regard and they are not hyping the goods and making outrageous claims of doing 100,000 miles per year either. |

James,
I would be interested in the region of the USA distribution linked to the responses to this poll as southern climes promote year-round riding (like in Texas).
My friend in Cleveland has his bike in storage for roughly 5 months and this significantly diminishes his annual mileage. Just a thought.
Ciao,

I try to ride to work as often as possible to save on the gasoline costs. And it is a lot more fun getting there. Round trip to work and back is just short of 85 miles so a few trips a week add up quickly. Weekends are usually a cruise or two of roughly 200 miles. |

If anyone knows, please tell me how NHTSA can estimate average miles per month (or any other time period) ?
Is it Voodoo, or do they have some realistic manner of making these estimates ?

Won't say voodoo doesn't play a part in it, but if you're willing to go asking or digging, here's a start: http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/depart...rd-30/ncsa/# |

Went to a traffic safety seminar on Wednesday. There were Va. State traffic experts present and I took the opportunity during a break to ask how the state and NHTSA came up with miles traveled per year for the different type vehicles. The reply was that these were based on VDOT estimates and that these were passed along to NHTSA.
I said "so you're saying this is Vodoo", and the answer was "that pretty well covers it".
So I guess I have my answer.

I would hazard an educated guess, based on statistical reference, that on the licence tag/plate renewals D.O.T. that they would ask for current miles on the vehicle (they do this in Canada in Kms upon yearly renewal) therefore they can "marry up" the previous profile and provide the stats with reasonable accuracy.

A year or so ago I think it was the MRF that put out a report on State DOTs reports to NHTSA that included motorcycle mile driven several states, including Florida, Oklahoma and South Dakota reported 0 motorcycle miles for several years.Voodoo maybe closer than you think. |

NHTSA reports that the average motorcyclist in the U.S. rides only about 2,000 per year. |

Yep. That's the kind of mileage I put on my bikes for the first 20 years of riding, or so. I now do probably a little less than 1,000 a month. But we all know motorcyclists who don't ride motorcycles - at least not very often. Their bike's stay in their garages except for the occassional 50 mile ride with friends. They bring the average down to about 160 miles per month in the U.S. and they also never gain any experieince - always newbies, month after month after month. |
